Thailand Is Quieter and Cheaper Right Now — The 2026 Numbers
Thailand is having an unusually quiet year, and for travelers that's very good news. Official figures released this month show foreign arrivals down 3.19% for the first seven months of 2026. The Thai Baht has weakened around 6% against the US dollar, making everything here cheaper for visitors. Most Western passports get 60-day visa-free entry. Hotels and villas are discounting hard. And out on the water — where we spend every day — the islands are emptier than we've seen them in years.
We run charters out of Phuket, and we'll be honest: fewer tourists isn't great for Thailand's economy. But if you've been thinking about a trip here, this is one of the best-value windows in a long time. Here's what the numbers actually mean for you — and why the window closes on 1 November, when high season begins.
In short: Fewer arrivals + weak baht + visa-free entry = quieter islands and lower prices, right now through October. Accommodation deals are extraordinary. Flights via the Gulf are running normally and remarkably cheap — we recently found a business-class return Phuket–Frankfurt for 55,000 THB (≈ €1,430 / US $1,670). Our own low-season charter rates are 20–40% below high season — and overnight charters of 5+ nights that sail before 1st November get a further 10% off.
What do the official numbers say?
Thailand welcomed about 18.5 million foreign visitors between 1 January and 1 August 2026. That sounds like a lot — but it's a 3.19% drop on the same period last year, according to figures reported by Nation Thailand and The Star.
At the same time, the baht has been one of Asia's weakest currencies this year — down roughly 6% against the US dollar (analysis here). Your money simply goes further. And entry is easy: travelers from the US, Canada, the UK, most of the EU, Australia and New Zealand currently get 60 days visa-free on arrival.

Why are fewer tourists coming?
Two big reasons — and neither should worry you.
First, group tourism from China has thinned dramatically. Chinese travelers traditionally filled Thailand's low season. But heavy coverage in Chinese media of scam-centre kidnappings in Cambodia has made many wary of the whole region, and a lot are choosing Vietnam this year instead. We see the effect directly: far fewer big Chinese group boats at the popular islands.
Second, travelers from Europe and other long-haul markets are hesitating because of the Iran war. Most flights between Europe and Thailand route through the Middle East, and the headlines have made people nervous about flying that way at all. This is the fear behind the empty seats — and it's exactly why fares have dropped so hard.
I can speak first-hand here. I've flown the Europe–Phuket route twice since the crisis began, both times through Gulf hubs. No delays, full planes, completely normal operations. The Gulf carriers — Qatar, Emirates, Etihad — remain among the best airlines in the world. And their prices right now are the silver lining: while writing this, I found a business-class return, Phuket–Frankfurt, for 55,000 THB (≈ €1,430 / US $1,670). That's business class, both ways, for less than many people paid for economy last high season.
So the reasons for the dip are real, but they have nothing to do with what awaits you here. Thailand itself is what it always was — just with more room, and with the cheapest way in that we've seen in years.
How cheap is accommodation really?
Genuinely startling. One example from my own life: I recently stayed (6th August 2026) in a beautiful private pool villa that normally goes for around 30,000 THB per night (≈ €790 / $850) in high season. I paid 5,000 THB (≈ €130 / $140). That's not a special connection or a secret code — deals like this are sitting openly on the booking platforms right now, because owners would rather fill rooms than leave them empty.
You won't find that villa at that price in January. This is a low-season phenomenon, amplified by the quiet year.
What does a quiet season look like on the water?
This is the part we know best. The budget group tours — the boats that pack 40-70 people onto a speedboat — are the segment that's shrunk most. The result:
The famous bays are calmer. You can anchor at spots that require queueing in January. Snorkelling sites feel private again. And availability is wide open — you can often book one of our catamarans days in advance instead of months.
For a longer private charter, there has genuinely never been a better moment in recent years. Prices are at their lowest, the islands are at their quietest, and the boats you want are actually free.
What our guests say:
"I had an amazing half-day trip to Racha Yai Island aboard the Sail La Vie yacht from Chalong Pier. The weather was perfect with calm seas, and the crew were incredibly friendly, helpful, and professional. The authentic Thai food prepared onboard was absolutely delicious — easily 10/10! The inflatable slide and water scooter made the snorkeling and swimming even more fun. Everything was well organized, from booking to the trip itself. Highly recommend Faraway Yachting for anyone looking for a memorable day trip or sailing experience in Phuket. Will definitely be back again!"

What about the weather in green season?
Fair question — this is the southwest monsoon season, and we won't pretend otherwise. It rains more, usually in short bursts, and we plan routes day by day around the conditions. The east side of Phuket and Phang Nga Bay stay well protected. We check the forecast for our whole fleet three times a day and route accordingly for comfort. There are no safety concerns and in our nearly 30 years of history we never had a weather related accident, nor any other serious accident.
What you get in exchange: green islands, dramatic skies, empty anchorages, and prices you'll never see between November and April. Many of our crew quietly prefer this season as everything is simply super GREEN.
How much can you save on a charter right now?
Our low-season rates run 20–40% below high/peak season prices, depending on the boat and the trip.
On top of that, we're running one simple offer: every overnight charter of 5 nights or more that sails before 1 November 2026 gets an additional 10% off. The charter itself needs to take place before 1 November — that's when high season starts and the window closes.
No coupon games, no fine print beyond that one date. If you've ever wanted to do a proper multi-day sailing trip through the Andaman — Phang Nga Bay, Racha, Phi Phi islands — this is the season to do it.
FAQ
Is Thailand safe to visit in 2026?
Yes. The drop in arrivals is driven by Chinese travelers avoiding the wider region after scam-centre stories in Cambodia, and by nervousness about Middle East flight routes — not by anything happening in Thailand's tourist areas. Phuket, the islands and the Andaman coast are operating completely normally, just with fewer crowds.
Are flights to Thailand disrupted by the Iran war?
Not in our experience. I've personally flown Europe–Phuket twice via Gulf hubs since the war began — no delays, full planes, normal service. The nervousness is keeping seats empty, though, and fares on Qatar, Emirates and Etihad have dropped hard: I recently found a business-class return Phuket–Frankfurt for 55,000 THB (≈ €1,430 / US $1,670). Check the Gulf carriers first.
Do I need a visa for Thailand?
Most Western travelers don't. Passport holders from the US, Canada, the UK, most EU countries, Australia and New Zealand get 60 days visa-free on arrival by air. You may be asked for proof of onward travel. Always check your own country's current rules before booking.
When does Thailand's high season start?
1 November. That's when the Andaman weather turns reliably dry, the crowds return, and prices step back up — including ours. The value window described in this post runs from now until the end of October.
How much cheaper are hotels in Thailand right now?
Discounts vary, but they're deep. As one real example, a pool villa that lists around 30,000 THB per night in high season was recently available at 5,000 THB. Browse the booking platforms for your dates — you'll see similar drops across Phuket, especially in the villa and resort segment.
Is the green season a bad time for a boat trip?
No — it's a different time. There's more rain and we choose routes more carefully, favouring the protected east coast or islands nearby. In return you get empty bays, green landscapes and the year's lowest prices. We sail all season and plan every day around the same-morning forecast.
What's the deal on overnight charters before November?
Every overnight charter of 5 nights or more that sails before 1 November 2026 gets 10% off — on top of low-season rates that are already 20–40% below high season. The trip must take place before 1 November.
Thinking about it? The quiet season won't wait — it ends 1 November. Message us on WhatsApp, tell us your dates and group size, and we'll show you which boats are free and what a 5-night trip through the quiet Andaman actually costs right now.→ Overnight charters
